I was just browsing through the talks on www.ted.com. While browsing I came across this video of Karen Thompson Walker talking about some fears people have for example she mentioned a true story in 1819 about a shipwreck. On the ship wreck there was 20 American sailors 3000 miles off the coast of Chile. These sailors got hit by a sperm whale which created a hole in their ship so they were basically sinking. There was obviously going to be a lot of fear in the sailor’s mind of death or just drowning. This has made me think about some of the fears nowadays. I think there are a lot of fears that most people fear are just in the mind and are more psychological fears than physical fears. There are a methods that people use now to get rid of the fears for example if someone is afraid of spiders, there are methods that can be used to overcome the fear for example three steps, first they look at pictures of spiders and overcome that part in the mind, second to actually see a real life spider but not touch it and finally to be able to touch it without being scared I know this because I studied psychology and learned about these methods.
